Beyond the Minimum: The Law of Love

STORY: Daddy, I don’t lie; I only hide the truth!

We’ve all been there. We follow the letter of the law while completely ignoring its spirit. We drive exactly 65 mph, but we’re tailgating the person in front of us. We don’t "lie," but we omit just enough truth to mislead.

In today’s Gospel, Jesus takes the stage and says, "Unless your righteousness surpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven." To his listeners, this was a shock. The Pharisees were the Olympic athletes of rule-following. How could anyone do more?

Jesus isn’t asking for more rules; He’s asking for more depth. He takes the Ten Commandments and moves the goalposts from our external actions to our internal intentions: from hands to hearts!

  • On Murder: It’s not just about the weapon in your hand; it’s about the anger in your heart.
  • On Adultery: It’s not just about the physical act; it’s about the lustful glance that devalues a person into an object.
  • On Oaths: It’s not about finding a clever way to swear a vow; it’s about being a person whose "Yes" simply means "Yes."

Jesus is performing "spiritual heart surgery." He knows that if we fix the heart, the hands will follow. If you don't harbor anger, you'll never commit violence. If you cherish your neighbor, you'll never steal from them. So, it is always a choice

The first reading from Ecclesiasticus reminds us that this isn't forced labor: "Before man are life and death, good and evil, whichever he chooses shall be given him." God respects our freedom too much to force us to be holy. We are given the "fire and water”, the choice is ours. Following the Law of Christ isn't a burden; it’s the choice to live as we were designed to live: in harmony and integrity.

Friends, the challenge is the "First Be Reconciled" Rule

Jesus gives us a very practical, uncomfortable instruction: If you are at the altar and remember your brother has something against you, leave. God is interested in a relationship, not religion! He tells us that our relationship with God is inextricably linked to our relationship with others. We cannot say "Amen" to the Body of Christ in the Eucharist while harboring a "No" toward the person sitting in the pew behind us.

Conclusion: Living the "Plus One" Life

The readings for the 6th Sunday in Ordinary Time (Year A) present us with a radical challenge: Jesus isn’t interested in "good enough." He’s looking for a transformation of the heart. This week, don't just aim for "not breaking the rules." Aim for the surpassing righteousness Jesus mentions.

  • Instead of just "not insulting" someone, try to actively encourage them.
  • Instead of just "not lying," be radically honest.
  • Instead of just "avoiding a fight," seek true reconciliation.

The Law of the Lord is a gift, not a cage. It’s the map that leads us out of the shallow waters of "getting by" and into the deep ocean of God’s grace. There God is! There he wants us!!! Let’s go!!!

Have a splendid week!
